Authorship Policy
The DILEMMA study is a collaborative project. The following session clarifies roles individuals will take as part of this collaborative project and types of acknowledgement associated with their contribution. For any peer reviewed publication associated with the DILEMMA study project we therefore define:- Study participant: any user with a professional background in line with the purposes of this study (including but not limited to consultants and trainees surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists, advanced nurse practitioners, physicians associates and other allied healthcare professionals involved in the management and decision making process for patient admitted to hospital with a pathology requiring an emergency laparotomy) registering for an account and completing all the activities associated with the “DILEMMAstudy participant course” will be acknowledged in any peer reviewed publications associated with the DILEMMA study group. Depending on the journal policies such acknowledgment may be made in the “Acknowledgement” session of the publication or via a link to a file hosted on the Dilemma study group website. If you do not wish for your details to be used for this purpose please do notify the DILEMMA study group (see "Your Information" form in the DILEMMAstudy participant course). Every participant will receive a breakdown of their results including decision making consistency index and most relevant factors affecting decision making according to Judgement Analysis methodology. Participating institutions will receive an anonymised report of the results of their participating members.
- Members of the group who do not take responsibility for authorship of the article but have contributed to the work that led to the article (Nonauthor Group Member or Recruiter). Individuals that opt to become recruiters for the DILEMMA study group will be acknowledged under this definition as nonauthor group members in any peer reviewed publication associated with the DILEMMA study activities (as per Council of Science Editors - CSE - Recommendations). Nonauthor Group Member roles will be assigned on a corporate model. For each institution involved in the DILEMMAstudy activities we will accept up to six nonauthor group members or recruiters in one of the following combinations:
- One consultant and one trainee for the departments of anaesthetic, intensive care and surgery (two for each department, for a total of six authors). The minimum accepted recruitment for each department is 15 participants in total (including recruiters) for a total of 45 recruitments per institution.
- For institutions where anaesthetic and intensive care departments are not separate entities, three individual recruiters will be accepted (at least one of which a trainee) for the departments of intensive care/anaesthetic and surgery (three for each department, for a total of six authors). The minimum accepted recruitment for each department is 20 participants in total (including recruiters) for a total of 40 recruitments per institution.
- For institutions where no trainees or trust grades are employed and the total consultant body per department is less than 20, one recruiter will be accepted for every 6 recruited individuals (including the recruiter).
In order to join the DILEMMA study group the above individuals will need to: (1) Register for an account (www.dilemmastudy.org/participate) and complete all the activities associated with the “DILEMMAstudy participant course”. (2) Recruit an appropriate number of suitable participants (including but not limited to consultant and trainee surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists, advanced nurse practitioners, physicians associates and other allied healthcare professionals - see above for details) within their institution. Recruited individuals will have to register for an account and complete all the activities associated with the “DILEMMAstudy participant course”.(3) Register the initiative as a quality improvement project in their institution (for UK centrers only).(4) Ensure that the resources available via the Website (dilemmastudy.org) are accessible via their institution’s IT network.
